ReplyDeleteHey, what is prop 8?
ReplyDeleteProposition 8 was a measure introduced to the voters in the state of California in the 2008 elections that would introduce a ban on all same sex marriges in California. As a result of enormous funding and misleading information on behalf of the advocates for the ban, largely rhe Morman and Catholic church, the proposition was passed. It is now illegal in the state of California to be married to your partner if they are of the same sex as you. Continued support goes in to repealing this and or striving towards an outcome that would extend this right to marry out to the homosexual community that the hetrosexual community has full rights to.
ReplyDeleteWow, I never imagined such a thing would happen in america.
ReplyDeleteBeing a firm believer in rights for the individual, I hope the ban is overturned. I find it irritating when the state attempts to dictate to people just how they should live.
It may sound egotistical but my primary concern is myself (ha, back to Rand and her selfishness!) and, though at times it may interest me, I have no real concern for how other people choose to live.
But, of course, we are told that freedom must exist within the boundaries set for us. Perhaps these boundaries we have are one of the negative points of what we call civilisation. Hmm, just a thought.
I do have a question though, do women earn the same as men in america? I mean are the wages equal?
I remember sitting in on a discussion about this subject once. Here in England men get paid more than women, so a marraige between two men would be more advantageous than that of a man and a woman (in monetary terms). It would mean two large wages coming into the same household, it would also mean no maternity/paternity leave.
I seem to remember that this point was used in opposition of same sex marraiges.
And all those companies endorsed prop 8? Crazy, I recognise a lot of them.
Keep me updated with what happens... :)
